Full Description
Owing to a shift in her cargo, the Antwerp City foundered in Portland Harbour in 1908. (1)
A few years later, in 1908, the Antwerp City proved that similar accidents could happen to steamships. Her cargo of grain had shifted after she had been struck by a heavy sea on the 9th March. Amazingly her crew managed to keep her afloat and, canted over at an acute angle, she managed to steam into Portland Harbour three days later. As with the County of Anglesea she was righted and sailed again a few days later.(2)
The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
