Full Description

An unidentified barge carrying limestone from Lyme to Bridport grounded on a ledge east of Lyme in 1823. The Dorset Coast Forum Maritime Archaeological Database records that "a barge carrying limestone from Lyme to Bridport, to be used in the improvements now effecting there, got on shore on a ledge east of Lyme in consequence of mistaking a light, but she was got off again without injury." Sherbourne Mercury for 17/11/1823 quoted in Draper, J. 2001 Quarrying the Lias at Lyme PDNHAS 123.015-22 (1) The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
