Full Description

The Naval Salvage Tug Elida went aground in Chesil Cove whilst trying to tow off the Preveza on the 15th January 1920. She was towed off on the 20th. (1) Source 2 gives the Tug's name as Ellida and gives the date of her grounding as the 25th and being towed off on the 27th. (2) The Ellida was a salvage tug which tried to get the Preveza off Chesil Beach, but was very nearly wrecked herself. As she manoeuvred close inshore she put out an anchor in order to help her pull off if necessary, unfortunately the anchor cable snapped and wrapped round her propeller fixing her firmly to the beach. A second rescue attempt was now launched, to save the Ellida. After two days of hard work the cable finally parted and the Ellida was saved. (3) The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known. Salvaged
