Full Description

The steamship with a schooner rig 'Ibex' collided with the disabled schooner 'Hannah Croasdale' (monument WX4994) off Portland in 1914. (1, 2) The 'Ibex' was a steamship with a schooner rig, built in 1891 for the Great Western Railway Company to operate from Weymouth on the Channel Island crossing. The vessel was specially ordered to compete with the London & South Western Railway Company's service to the Channel Island's from Southampton. In 1897 the Ibex struck some rocks off Jersey in 1897 whilst reportedly 'racing' the Frederica, a LSWR steamer. In January 1900 the vessel struck rocks off Guernsey and sank with the loss of two lives. Two months later the Ibex was refloated, repaired and refurbished and brought back into service. On 18th April 1914, whilst off Portland, the vessel collided with the disabled schooner Hannah Croasdale causing considerable damage to both vessels. Three years later, on 19th September 1917, Ibex collided with a Great Western Railway steamer the Aletta some 20 miles from Weymouth. The Ibex was finally broken up in 1926. (3)
