Full Description

Steamer 'Persian Monarch' carrying cattle was stranded on Portland breakwater on 29th of October 1886. It was towed off by its sister ship 'Grecian' on November 5th (information from Peter Trim). (1) In foggy conditions, on the night of the 29th October 1886, the Persian Monarch, a 3900 ton steamer, ran straight onto Portland Breakwater under full power. Remarkably she suffered little damage and was easily towed off two weeks later. Much more difficult had been the salvage of her cargo, of live cattle! (2) The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known. Gross tonnage
