Summary

Probably wreckage from HMS Amazon, frigate, which was wrecked off the coast of France on 13 January 1797. Wreckage found off Portland. See Staffordshire Advertiser, Saturday, 28 January 1797.

Full Description

Eighteenth century wreck lost off Portland, part of the wreckage is reported to have washed up on shore (1) "Amazon". Part of wreckage washed up at Portland (2) This vessel is only known from documentary evidence. The location given is only approximate The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
