Map

Type and Period (2)

Full Description

26-SEP-1955: Landing barge. Old wreck, least water 36ft, position 50 34.59N 002 25.35W or 250.5 deg. 2400 feet from Able Head light, eastern breakwater. (1) Landing craft in 50 34.99N 002 25.59W, or 0.5 mile due west of the east ship channel entrance to Portland Harbour, in 15m depth. Small, intact, landing craft, on a silty, shell-covered, seabed environment. (2) A Royal Navy landing craft that sank off Portland Breakwater between 1940 and 1944. Lying on silt. (4) Position 50 34.99 N 2 25.59 W taken from (2) Probably the same as Landing Craft G. NB: A number of pontoons, landing craft, bombardon units, etc. are known to lie around the vicinity of Portland, lost during or in the aftermath of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, and in the context of the description of the vessel, it would seem reasonable to assume that this wreck site represents another one of these; the date of loss has therefore been recorded as 1944. See, for comparison, SY 78 SW 65 to 67 inclusive. (5) Date of Loss Qualifier: Approximate date of loss
