Full Description

A Sand Barge was being towed by Flying Kestrel when it sank at Milkmaid Shoal in 1955. (1) The Liverpool tug Flying Kestrel sent out a distress call that she had lost her tow the barge Sandheap, off Poole Bar Buoy. The barge was drifting shorewards in a very rough sea in wind conditions ESE with one man aboard. Coxswain Robert Brown took the Swanage lifeboat R.L.P. round Old Harry rocks and into Studland Bay, where he saw the barge aground on Milkmaid shoal and seas breaking right over her. With very little water alongside, the lifeboat frequently striking the bottom, the craft was anchored and allowed to drift down on the wreck and by skilful use of her engines, the lone seaman was saved and was landed at Poole. (2) The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
