Full Description

St Aldhelm's Church near Wareham. (1) St Aldhelm set out on his journey to Rome in 700AD and sailed from an anchorage in Dorset where he built a church. William of Malmesbury writing his biography of St. Aldhelm, circa 1125, from well-authenticated sources, mentioned that the stone walls (maceriae) of this church were still standing though the roof had gone; he gave the location of these remains as two miles from the shore, near Wareham, and where Corfe Castle stands up over the sea! The location is rather obscure but efforts have been made by Williams (1) and 98 NW 34). Jackson and Fletcher, however, whilst considering the whole subject of identification as conjectural, claimed that St. Georges Church, Langton Matravers (specifically the outline of an earlier nave on the 15th century west tower - see SY 97 NE 48) was a stronger candidate than the other suggestions.
