Listed Building record MWX781 - The Boat House, Lake Drive, Hamworthy

A detached house built around 1936 for Mr Cullen, a Lloyds underwriter. It is of reinforced concrete with steel beams clad in whitewashed brick. It has a flat, tarred roof and hipped, blue glazed pantile roofs to the porch and roof shelter. The building is rectangular, set around a central internal light well. On the Poole Harbour front there is a projecting, single-storey loggia. The shelter on the roof is flanked by timber pergolas with white-washed canvas screens across them which have `porthole openings. The house incorporates fittings from the second class drawing room on the transatlantic liner RMS Mauretania. The Boat House is, with Landfall, the most complete surviving Modern-style house of the inter-war period in the Bournemouth area. The fittings from the Mauritania, on which the first owner Mr Cullen is said to have often travelled, give it a special interest. These elements have been re-used with wit and style in a way which evokes their original context.
