Abstract/Summary

At the Sherborne meeting of the PDNHAFC on 28 and 29/8/1890, Mr. R.D. Carpenter spoke about the history of Sherborne Abbey Church. ‘He observed that a portion of the Roman pavement found on the site of the Abbey some time ago, carried the history of the church back to a period anterior to the Anglo-Saxon time of the…eighth century…’ Bishops Roger and Thurston pulled down the Anglo-Saxon cathedral except for the western doorway of the north aisle of the nave and some adjoining walls. The church of All Hallows was built adjoining the west end of the Abbey Church in the 14th century. A dispute arising between the vicars and the Abbot lead to a riot during which a burning arrow was shot into the thatched roof of the choir of the Abbey Church which was ignited and consumed. The walls of the choir and tower still bear the marks of this conflagration.
