Abstract/Summary

AC Archaeology conducted a desk based assessment of land adjacent to Brecon House, Sherborne during 1997 in advance of proposed residential development. The work comprised an examination of archaeological, cartographic and documentary records as well as a site inspection. The site encompassed 0.33 hectares with tarmac at the front and a densely overgrown shrubbery to the rear. The study demonstrated that the Long Street frontage had formerly been occupied by two tenements, possibly of medieval origin. The southern part had previously been part of ‘Rack Close’, a name associated with the cloth industry. The area lies within Eastbury, a late medieval Suburb of Sherborne.
