Abstract/Summary

‘Niall Oakey conducted an archaeological evaluation of the former Saunder’s Garage, Digby Road during June 2002. four machine trenches measuring 4m x 1.5m were excavated in areas likely to be effected by development. A small amount of medieval artefacts was recovered from residual contexts. The earliest structure was the parish workhouse in use from the late 18th-early 19th centuries and demolished by the late 1860’s. partially robbed foundations of one wing of this building was found at a depth of 0.81m. a thick topsoil (0.5-0.8m) overlay much of the site suggesting a long period of agricultural or horticultural use. A functioning late 19th century stone culvert was also recorded.
