Abstract/Summary

Bournemouth Archaeology was commissioned by Scottish and Southern Engergy to undertake archaeological observations and recording during the excavation of a cable trench across the hillfort of Woodbury Hill, which is a scheduled monument (SM28386). For most of its length the trench ran along a trackway which runs north-south across the hillfort. The profile of a truncated bank and ditch were observed towards the northern end of the trench, and the author concluded that these features probably relate to the northern ramparts of the hillfort, which survive as earthworks on either side of the track. It appears, therefore, that the present track does not run through an entrance to the fort. The cut of the trench did not reach the bottom of the ditch, which appears to have filled relatively slowly.
