Abstract/Summary
Bournemouth Archaeology was commissioned to undertake a geophysical survey on the site proposed for a new village hall for Horton and Chalbury parishes. The proposed development site was close to the remains of a seventeenth-century Verwood Pottery kiln, and it was thought likely that a kilnr or associated deposits might survive in this area, particularly as documentary evidence shows that pottery was manufactured in Horton parish throughout the post-medieval period. The geophysical techiques of resistivity and gradiometry were employed. A variety of anomalies were identified, some of which appeared to stem from modern features or disturbance, or stray ferrous material. The report concludes by suggesting locations for trenches to evaluate unexplained anomalies which would be directly affected by the proposed building and associated parking area.
