Abstract/Summary

Archaeological excavation conducted by the National Trust in advance of consolidation and mitigation work associated with tourism, continued at Corfe Castle during 1994. In April 1994, the topsoil covering the rubble blocking the east side of the inner ward gateway was removed in preparation for opening up the original entrance from the west bailey to the inner ward in order to discourage visitors from clambering over the ruined curtain wall. Consolidation work took place on the collapsed section of the curtain wall immediately south of the outer bailey 2nd tower. In November the outer bridge was excavated to the civil war level in preparation for resurfacing with a pitched limestone path. The 1646 sappers trenches were also revealed in plan around the outer gatehouse.
