Abstract/Summary

Observations maintained during groundworks associated with refurbishment of facilities at the rear of Castle House in Bimport, Shaftesbury, revealed deep deposits of heavily disturbed ‘made ground’ of recent origin, over natural greensands. No interpretable archaeological deposits were identified. The report concludes that, despite the high archaeological potential of this area of the town, prior disturbances to this site have compromised the archaeological integrity of deposits that might otherwise have existed here. The present work, therefore, has not had a deleterious archaeological impact. The small archive of retained materials and accompanying records (Asi 3088), currently held at the offices of Asi at No. 61 East Street, Warminster, Wiltshire, will be deposited with the Dorset County Museum and, following microfilming, the National Monuments Record centre.
