Abstract/Summary

Report on an archaeological watching brief during groundworks for the construction of a new garage and boundary wall at Bellevue, 2 Pound Lane, Wareham between March 16th and April 16th 2009. 'The development at 'Bellevue', 2 Pound Lane, lies within the historic town of Wareham and is located at the western extent of the town, on the southern side of the junction of Pound Lane and West Street. The Town Pound lies north-east of Belleview's driveway. The house, which was built in 1885, appears to have been constructed over part of the southern stretch of the defensive Saxon ramparts, known as West Walls. Remnants of the wall's ditch lie immediately to the west of the house. There has been no previous archeological work at this location. The objectives of the brief were to monitor the site by observation and recording, as two phases of building work, comprising the replacement of a garage and boundary wall progressed. Phase 1 consisted of groundworks associated with the garage, Swimming pool area and boundary wall to the east of the house. Phase 2 is the replacement of the remainder of the boundary wall to the south, west and north of the property. The construction of the house and cellar in 1885 and the swimming pool in the early 1970s comprehensively destroyed evidence for the monument [West Wall] in these areas.'
