Abstract/Summary

A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for residential dwellings on land to the east of Whatcombe Road, Winterborne, Whiteciurch, Dorset, immediately to the east of the Winterborne and north of the present village. The site is centred at NGR ST 8390 0040 and lies at a height of approximately 70m aOD. The natural geology is shown on the BGS survey as valley gravel overlying Upper Chalk. Observations confirmed this as a topsoil, over a gravely subs, over Upper Chalk were revealed. No evidence of occupation was observed and no finds older than early Modern, except undiagnosed flint, were recovered. The watching brief took place between 14 June and 5 October 1999. All the archaeological work was carried out by Southern Archaeological Services Ltd of Southampton and was funded by Mike Parker Homes.
