Abstract/Summary
Trenches were excavated towards the eastern and western ends of the southern boundary of the proposed development area, which lies along the postulated route of a Roman military road from Lake Farm, near Wimborne, to Wareham. The eastern trench (Trench 1) revealed hard-packed gravels, which seem likely to be the remains of this road, while the western trench (Trench 2) showed only undisturbed natural deposits beneath the modern ploughsoil, suggesting either there is a deviation from the projected course or that the road has been completely eroded or destroyed in the western part of the site A medieval road boundary ditch was also revealed cutting through the Roman road gravels.
