Abstract/Summary

Archaeological Investigations Ltd was commissioned by Sherborne School for Girls through their agents, Humberts, to carry out an archaeological evaluation at the site of Sherborne School for Girls in Dorset. As part of the assessment Barlett Clark Consultancy had previously carried out an archaeogeophysical survey that identified features of potential archaeological interest within the main lawn area (HAS 831). This phase of the works required that six, 10m x 2m evaluation trenches were excavated within the study area to investigate these potential features. No finds or features were observed within the excavated evaluation trenches to entirely explain the geophysical survey responses. However, excavation of the evaluation trenches has possibly indicated that the north-eastern side of the study area once contained a natural pond or flow channel that may have formed a natural barrier within a prehistoric landscape.
