Abstract/Summary

A preliminary, largely desk-based assessment has been undertaken to identify evidence for archaeological or historical interests in the area of a proposed new swimming pool within the 19th century walled garden at Melbury Sampford House. The study has identified three principal interests. First, the possible presence of deposits related to the Medieval settlement which was cleared by the time of the construction of the 16th century house. Secondly, the site may contain evidence for a formal Tudor garden, and thirdly, the site may lie within a planned 18th century garden, shown on an elaborate plan, but which may not have been constructed on the proposed site.
