Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Dorset County Council to carry out an archaeological evaluation in advance of the proposed construction of a silage clamp at land at Dairy Farm, Charlton Marshall (centred on ST 9013 0339). The evaluation was undertaken in accordance with Planning Policy Guidance Note 16, following the advice of the County Archaeological Officer that important buried archaeological remains may occur at the site. The evaluation site comprises an area of grass and hard standing, covering c. 0.05 hectare, in the south of the farmyard and is currently used for the storage of agricultural materials. The evaluation involved the excavation of two machine trenches comprising c. 3.2% of the proposed development area. The trenches revealed between 0.2 m and 0.3 m of topsoil, from which small quantities of burnt and worked flint were recovered, overlying weathered chalk bedrock. No in situ archaeological features or deposits were encountered.
