Abstract/Summary
This report details the project history undertaken at Goldfields Farm upon a field known as East Long Ground. This include several air photographs taken of the site since WWII, metal detector surveys conducted in the early 1990s, and a magnetometry survey in 1996.
In 1998, Goldfields Farm became the centre for a survey and excavation by Ian Hewitt for Bournemouth university. This was to test the results of the magnatometer survey conducted two years previously. For this excavation nine trenches were cut.
In October of 1999 a field walking exercise was conducted on site with the aid of metal detectors.
The 1998 evaluation was essentially a ground-truthing exercise. Intrusive excavation of features was restricted and in most cases it was sufficient to verify that the features suggested by the 1996 magnetometer survey. However, there is evidence to show Neolithic, Bronze age, Iron age and Romano-British activities
The report progresses into the proposal for further development with the aim to determine the nature, dates and phases of the archaeological features at Goldfields Farm.
