Abstract/Summary

This report sets out the results of Phases 1 and 2 of the Isle of Portland Industrial Archaeology Survey, commissioned and funded by English Heritage through the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF). The overall aim of the project is to improve the regional and local curatorial management of the Historic Environment of Portland in relation to the exploitation of crushed limestone aggregate. About 400 sites belonging to the industrial period (c.1750 onwards) have been identified mostly from map sources and the Dorset SMR. These sites have been listed in a spreadsheet using a new terminology agreed with the Dorset SMR manager. Of the c400 sites noted above, only c146 are listed in the Dorset SMR.
