Abstract/Summary

‘A fluxgate gradiometer survey was undertaken on land at the Southern Counties Complex in Dorset. This has recorded only limited indicators of potential archaeological remains - a small number of linear anomalies in the northern part of the site, possibly buried ditches. The survey has not recorded any clearly-defined sub-surface indications of two levelled Bronze Age barrows in the northern part of the site, nor a suspected Iron Age enclosure in the southeast region (as identified by cropmark evidence). Weak variation probably indicates natural features - zones of slightly enhanced variation predominately in the northern part of the site. Widespread magnetically strong responses in the western half of the site relate to recent and current activities, in particular use of this area as a shooting ground. A number of buried services extend across the mid part of the site, with a possible further service in the south-western area.’
