Abstract/Summary
'Mike Griffiths and Associates Ltd were commissioned by the Hotel du Vin to undertake limited archeological excavation and a watching brief during groundworks at the site of the Mansion House Hotel, in Poole. The excavation of a soakaway recorded a series of late medieval reclamation deposits infilling the waterfront behind the medieval street frontage. The watching brief in the main courtyard recorded a number of post medieval and early modern foundations and surfaces. Many of these structures correlated to those shown on the 19th and early 20th century Ordnance Survey maps.
The results of this evaluation appear to support interpretation of the Town Wall boundary provided in an unpublished Desk Assessment by MGA (2007)
Natural subsoil was not observed during any of the works. With the exception of the soakaway the new development did not have any impact on any deposits of a medieval date ensuring that the significant archaeological deposits of the site were left in situ.
