Abstract/Summary

An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out on behalf of Persimmon Homes (South Coast) Ltd as part of the planning for an urban extension to Weymouth. The recorded cultural heritage resource within a 1.5km radial Study Area from the centre of the site was considered as well as the proposed site itself. The potential archaeological resource within the site was overall considered to be of local to regional importance. There were no designated sites or monuments within the site and it was considered that there would be a negligible impact on the setting of the scheduled monument and listed buildinds in the study area nor the Conservation Area. There were elements of the historic landscape of the site and study areas such as the trackway and medieval and earlier land divisions preserved within the extant 17th and 18th century inclosure boundaries that would be impacted. It was recommended that these be retained and enhanced in the development proposals.
