Abstract/Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting undertaken as part of the Dorset County Museum Norden Project, which was started in 2004 to provide a context for a series of metal-detecting discoveries (DCM Entry 5516) and comprising successive site surveys and excavations (NCC06, NCC06 and NCC07 held as a single archaeological archive at the DCM). This interim report indicates that processing and conservation of material is under way, and makes a few preliminary observations. A concentration of late Iron Age coins was recorded in the south-eastern part of Field A where a hoard of late Iron Age staters was found in 2004 and a series of possible structures revealed by geophysical survey and sample excavations in 2005. A lack of 1st and 2nd-century Roman coins was noted, and interpreted as suggesting a hiatus in activity in the early Roman period. The Roman coin assemblage of small denomination late 3rd and 4th century coins was spread across the same area as the Iron Age coins and also to the west and north-west where a spread of Roman building material was recorded and a wall footing exposed and recorded.
