Abstract/Summary

A report on a desk-based assessment intended to form part of a planning application for 150 residential units and a small employment/office hub on a site of around 5.5 hectares. The authors suggest that the place names 'Barrow Hill' and 'The Ring' may indicate prehistoric activity in the area, and identify a mound on Barrow Hill from aerial photographs. Recorded archaeology includes Roman activity in the late 3rd and 4th centuries, medieval and post-medieval. Documentary evidence shows the site had its present form from at least 1782, and was previously pasture. The authors conclude that potential for survival of archaeological remains on the site is low, owing to the impact of arable cultivation in recent years.
