Abstract/Summary
I attach a photo taken on 14.11.19 of this ancient roadside drinking trough fed by a spring which is piped from the hillside above. GR. ST 75950655 on left of road coming down from Bulbarrow hill just beyond the entrance on the right to Hill Farm. We cleared it and overgrowing vegetation on that day, as we try to do on a regular basis. (It's muddy because I had just scooped out the debris).
… Chris Eyres of Birds Nest Farm HB whose family have been in the area for many generations, says it was called the "Bread and Cheese Hotel" because the carters used to water their horses there before tackling the steep hill and eat their lunch while they and their horses slaked their thirst. I myself have drunk the water direct from the pipe and it is excellent.
Some years ago the trough was badly damaged after a vehicle ran into it and was repaired by Highways. At the same time they put in hazard posts either side of it but as you can see they have recently been smashed by a vehicle. We retrieved some of the bits and propped them up to provide a temporary visual warning. I wonder if you could arrange for your team to replace the hazard posts and also clear the road drain into which the trough drains as it is currently blocked, so all the water runs down the road. You might consider that some other physical protection for this interesting historical relic would be appropriate.
