SDO16766 - Poundbury hillfort, Dorchester. A Geophysical Survey

Licensed by English Heritage under Section 42 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, a geophysical survey using magnetometry was carried out on the interior of the Iron Age hillfort . The phasing of this monument has previously been interpreted from parch-marks and excavation of ramparts and neighbouring settlements (Green 1987). The results of this survey are consistent with that interpretation and add detail regarding the number and nature of the internal features. Despite modern magnetic interference, a number of additional structures have been identified and some questions posed about known features. The level of occupation within the hillfort revealed by this survey is higher than expected but not intensive.
