SDO191 - Excavations at Wessex Court, Charles Street, Dorchester, Dorset, 1990. Volume 1: Text & Appendix I

Full report on the excavations of Trench 6 in 1990. Divided into 9 phases. Prehistoric activity comprised four undated ditches, plus 2 Durotrigian coins. Some mid 1st century finds including a Claudian as of AD41-64. Two ditches pre-date early Roman timber buildings. Site levelled with rubble and soil and buildings constructed from 2nd century AD onwards. One post-built structure surrounded by boundary walls. Two successive stone buildings also belong to early Roman phase. In the late Roman period a substantial stone building replaced the earlier buildings during the 4th century. In the post-Roman period activity may be represented by postholes cut through opus signum floors in the late Roman building. A total of 3 possible rectangular structures. In the medieval period, the area reverted to agricultural land. Robbing of the Roman buildings continued into the early post-medieval period. Report also contains full finds reports.
