SDO9387 - Maumbury Rings, Dorchester: The Excavations of 1908-1913

A report on the unpublished excavations undertaken by H St George Gray at Maumbury Rings between 1908-1913. The report is divided into three distinct sections dealing with the Neolithic Henge Monument, the Roman amphitheatre and the Civil War fortifications. The section on the Neolithic monument is considered in detail including detailed records of the shaft contents, a reconstruction of the fragmentary records for the ditch and bank and entrance. There is a full discussion of the Neolithic monument and its place within contemporary monuments in southern Britain. The Roman amphitheatre section has a consideration of the various elements of the amphitheatre and an analysis and interpretation of the form of the monument. To finish, there is a rather summary account of the Civil War elements of the site and a short discussion of its historical context.
