SDO9409 - Excavations at Wessex Court , Charles Street, Dorchester, Dorset, 1989

Full (unpublished) report on the excavations of Trenches 1-5 in 1989. Divided into 9 phases. Prehistoric activity comprised 8 further postpits of Late Neolithic timber monument, an undated prehistoric ditch, and prehistoric soils. In the early Roman period, part of a diagonal SW-NE road was found and a number of elements of timber buildings of several phases. A number of antefix fragments were associated with these buildings. Timber buildings were replaced by larger stone buildings in the Late Roman period, sometimes on a different alignment. Several phases of buildings. To the south of the road, the area was devoid of buildings and had a large number of pits and gullies. Further to the south, the remains of 2 phases of rampart were exposed. In the post-Roman period, there was robbing of stone from the buildings and traces of a path and other surfaces. In the medieval period the area reverted to agricultural land. Robbing of the Roman buildings continued into the early post-medieval period. Report also contains full finds reports.
