Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation, comprising the excavation of three trenches, was undertaken during October 1997 in advance of redevelopment of the site. All trenches contained well-preserved archaeological deposits, generally of Romano-British or early post-medieval date, though all trenches contained a buried prehistoric former land surface containing quantities of worked flint. The Romano-British evidence comprised occupation soils, a length of wall, and a substantial pit containing rubble infill, considered to be a well. Artefacts recovered comprised local and imported pottery, fragments of tile and tesserae and several fragments of decorated vessel glass. The Romano-British deposits were sealed in some areas by a sequence of pits and midden deposits containing large quantities of pottery and oysters, likely to be of 17th century date.
