Abstract/Summary

The 6th season of excavations at Poundbury lasted for 12 weeks on three sites. At site B another 80 inhumations were excavated, all generally E-W oriented, coffined inhumations. One burial in particular, at the centre of a cluster of burials, was of an adult male with a child placed on the side of either leg and with his hands placed on the childrens heads. Although the main priod of use was the 4th century, some burials were clearly later, containing material from collapsing mausolea, and may date from a final 5th century phase of use. In the area of the post-Roman settlement within site B, worked was confined to the area south of mausoleum R8 where a substantial structure and pit complex were excavated. In Site C a neolithic pit was excavated and a complex of Bronze Age rectangular structures and rectilinear ditch system was revealed. This Bronze Age ditch was cut by a Late Iron Age gully which had itself been cut by six crouched burials. A further Bronze Age E-W aligned gully was excavated in site D and seems to form part of a field system. Site D also contained burials dating from the 2nd-3rd centuries AD, including 3 cremations in BBW jars and 20 inhumations on N-S and E-W alignments. Also contains interim reports on Human skeletal remains and animal bones.
