Abstract/Summary

Excavation continued at the Bronze Age settlement and Late Roman site on sites C, D and E. On site C the midlle Bronze Age settlement, enclosed by a pair of ditches and a pallisade trench, was found to cover an area of 2,500 sg feet. 17 late Roman burials were also excavated. On Site D a circular Iron Age hut, a 3rd century AD house with ovens and cess pits, and 26 3rd century burials mostly aligned N-S some with grave goods, were excavated. A strip of ground seaparated this pagan cemetery from the later Christian one where a further 26 burials were excavated. Site E was further up the hillside to the SW, where 2 Neolithic/Bronze Age flint quarries were excavated. The southern perimeter of the late Roman Christian cemetery was also found, along with two mausolea containing painted wall plaster and two burials. 13 further inhumations were excavated along with a complex of post-Roman pits and and a corn drying oven, superseded by two phases of palisaded enclosures.
