SDO9723 - Notes on Roman Sites in Dorchester, 1963-65, South Street: Home and Colonial Supermarket, SY 69289050. Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society

The conversion in 1963 of Thurman's old premises on the east side of South Street almost opposite the Norwich Union Assurance site necessitated the laying of a new drain from the rear to the Charles Street sewer. The trench, running along the south side of the rear yard, cut through a layer of charcoal and fallen wall-plaster 2.5ft below the surface at a point 20ft west of Charles Street. The plaster retained elements of two different designs; a blue circular band enclosed by red lines on a white ground, and imitation marbling of black and white flecks on a red ground.
