Abstract/Summary
[?Bodies] [?Unearthed] in the [?Borough]
[?Gardens] from time to time ‘[?suggesting]
links’ with the remote past have come to light
in our [?ancient] town. And during the past few
weeks there have been a series of further dis-
coveries. These were made during the [?]
of excavating the ground on the north side of
the Borough Gardens for the purpose of making
new tennis courts, a work that was put in hand
by the Town Council for the benefit of the
unemployed. In some portions of the ground
the excavations were of considerable depth, and
several [?jawbones] and other charred bones
were found. On Tuesday morning a man’s
skull was unearthed and subsequently an orna-
mented urn. Two front teeth are missing from
the top jaw, and the remainder are in a good
state of preservation. The bottom jaw is separate
from the upper portion of the skull, which has
been pronounced by Captain J. E. Acland to be
a better specimen than any in the County Museum.
In all probability it will be handed over to the
Museum authorities. As with many other urns
That have been found in Dorchester, the one
Unearthed in the Borough Gardens evidently
Dates back to the Roman period. Altogether
Portions of three skeletons have been unearthed,
Another skull being found on Wednesday.
Several coins have also been discovered. Mr. H.
D. Strange (Borough Surveyor) is taking every
Care in [?seeing] that anything of antiquarian
Value is carefully preserved.
