Abstract/Summary
This report contains the results of an archaeological survey on the proposed site of the launch area (centred on SY98458551) for the Wytch Moor crossing on the Wellsite D – Gathering Station infield flowline. The survey was conducted in accordance with the BP document ‘ A Strategy for Archaeological Investigation - Wytch Farm Oilfield Development’ (Mason 1986).
The evidence produced by the magnetometer survey and the relatively high quantity of Medieval pottery and fired clay found in the soil matrix, indicate that in situ archaeological deposits exist within the survey area. However, only Trial Pit 74, excavated on a geophysical anomaly, identified an archaeological feature and this was at a depth below the proposed level of topsoil stripping. The dating of the pottery is consistent with material found in the previously excavated (March 1988) area to the south, on the Wellsite D to Gathering Station flowline.
