Abstract/Summary
This report contains a summary of the results of an archaeological assessment survey in the Wytch Farm Oilfield Development undertaken August 1987 by the Trust for Wessex Archaeology. The survey covered the extension to Wellsite F and includes the site of the new flare pit, an area of c 5000 sq m.
The geophysical survey did not produce any noteworthy anomalies and so was not used to determine the location of the trial pits. The trial pits were located randomly except for TP 5 which was located over a small gully.
Presented below is a summary of the archaeological results form the individual trial pits. Ten pits were excavated, 1-8 in the Wellsite extension and nos 9-10 in the area of the new flare pit. Completed field record forms containing detailed information may be found in the site archive, ref TWA 1987 W206. The location of the trial pits across the assessment area is shown in Fig 1. ‘Total depth’ records the excavated depth to the underlying natural drift geology.
