Abstract/Summary
This report contains a summary of the results of an archaeological survey undertaken during March 1988 by the Trust for Wessex Archaeology. The survey area comprised the proposed flowline route across Furzey Island from Wellsite K to Wellsite L. The western section of the flowline route crosses the 1985 spoil deposit area through which survey was reduced. The eastern section of the flowline, across the lorry park to Wellsite L is by thrust bore construction. The assessment area therefore comprised the full width of the central section of the flowline; across the main lawn to the thrust bore pit.
No archaeological deposits were located across the lawn, although areas of the lawn are sealed with an infill of sand it is possible that deeply buried features may exist, masked for the purposes of geophysical survey.
Within the area of rhododendra, TP 702 revealed a buried humic horizon below the linear bank. There were no finds to aid dating this layer. It is likely that the mound consists of upcast material from the adjacent trackway to the west. However it has been noted elsewhere on the island that in some instances modern tracks and paths utilise the alignments of Iron Age ditches.
