Abstract/Summary
Dorset County Council Archaeological Service recommended that groundworks for a gas pipeline between Littlemoor and Chickerell be monitored by an archaeologist. Accordingly A Hak, contractors for British Gas, Transco, appointed Southern Archaeological Services Ltd to carry out a watching brief. Fieldwork was carried out between 13 August and 28 October 1997. The natural deposits encountered were Forest Marble, Cornbrash, Alluvial deposits, Oxford Clay, Plateau Gravels, Corallian Limestone and Kimmeridge Clay. A well-preserved system of water-meadows was recorded to the west of the River Wey near Nottington, and the field boundaries along the route noted. A Post-Mediaeval pottery scatter near a lime kiln was found North of Chickerell Power Station. Little else of archaeological interest was found.
