Abstract/Summary
The preliminary archaeological assessment of the proposed Chickerell Link Road involved the collection and assessment of information from historical, documentary and archaeological sources, as well as carrying out a walkover survey and monitoring of engineering trial pits in an attempt to define areas of archaeological potential not previously recorded. The assessment has shown there is little evidence for archaeological activity within the proposed road corridor, although the documentary survey has revealed the presence of the former 'Common Pond' crossed by the proposed road scheme immediately east of Putton Lane. This has been shown to exist from at least as early as 1792. The walkover survey has revealed the presence of drainage channels at the NE end of the scheme of probable post-medieval date. There are no recorded archaeological sites directly affected by the proposed road scheme, with the nearest site, an Iron Age / Romano-British occupation and burial site, 300m to the NW in the former Putton Lane Brickyards.
