Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was carried out in March 1995 at the request of the District Planning Authority. A previous desk-based assessment of historical cartographic sources had shown there to be some potential for Medieval deposits on the site, associated with a possible waterfront. The evaluation trenches did not reveal any positive evidence for any Medieval structures or finds. The sequence of deposits recorded during the investigation comprised largely nineteenth-century infilling of the backwater. This area may therefore have existed, in the Middle Ages, as a beach or hard, rather than as a stone of wooden quay. The north part of the site, outside the area requested for evaluation and currently occupied by standing structures, may yet contain archaeological evidence.
