Listed Building: NO 101 INCLUDING OUTBUILDING TO SOUTH-EAST (104108)

689/2/195 NEWLAND 04-OCT-73 (North side) 101 No 101 including outbuilding to south- east GV II* House. Late C13 [tree-ring dated 1297]; remodelled C17 and extended C19. Dressed limestone. Welsh slate roof with gabled ends, the lower courses at eaves stone tiles, pantiles at rear. Gable-end and axial stacks with red brick shafts. PLAN: 3-bay open hall with screens passage and putative service bay on left [NW] and with parlour and solar on right [SE]. The service end of the house is missing and the parlour and solar have been replaced by a C19 loft over a carriageway. Evidence for a range at the rear of the lower west bay of the hall. In C17 the house was remodelled, the walls were rebuilt in stone and a floor, partitions and chimney stacks were installed in the hall. Interior altered again in the early C19. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window south front; three 4-light moulded stone mullion windows on left, one on first floor and two on ground floor, those on ground floor with hoodmould continued over moulded stone doorframe to right of centre; 16-pane sashes to right and C19 right-hand end bay with lower clay plain tile roof, 12-pane sash on first floor and plank double-doors to carriageway below. At rear [N] late C19 or C20 casements, late C20 porch and steps on left to C20 first floor window over carriageway; long stone wing on right, extended with lower late C19 brick outbuilding. INTERIOR: The left [west] room has deeply chamfered cross-beams with large step stops and C20 chimneypiece. C17 panelling between left [west] room and hall passage; elliptical moulded arch with pilasters in passage and early C19 staircase with stick balusters, turned newels and moulded handrails. Early C19 panelled doors. Small early-mid C19 fireplaces with simple moulded chimneypieces and iron grates. Roof: Two raised base-cruck trusses of former 3-bay hall with chamfered arch-braces and pentagonal spandrel-like blocks between the collars-ties, arch-braces and tops of the cruck blades, through which are threaded the square-set roof-plates with elaborate scarf-joints; only the roof-plates at the front of the west and centre bays and at the rear of the east bay remain, their wind-braces missing; short crown-posts with struts to crown-purlins also missing, but section of crown-purlin re-used as common-rafter; original common-rafters also missing and only principal-rafters of west truss remain; much of timber-framed partition in NW end wall survives. The cruck blades were set on sole-plates about half way up the walls and upper part of walls originally timber-framed, but now rebuilt in stone except for section of sole-plate remaining at south end of south front wall.
