Description

1. 5191 SOUTH STREET (West Side) Former Tannery building immediately west of rear extension to No 20 SY 4692 1/434 II GV 2. Early C19. Hammer dressed stone. Pitched slate roof. 3 storeys. Originally it had 3 ranges of segment-headed arches (flat on top storey) open to the weather: these are now blocked with red brick, and with modern or C19 planked loading doors. Winch hoist over right hand bay. Low 2 storey extension joins this building to No 20. West range of this building is hammer dressed stone with coursed rubble end wall. Pitched slate roof. Red brick stack. 3 storeys. South elevation divided into 4 bays by stone piers, spaces between filled in by segment headed arches on ground floor and red brick above. 3 industrial windows with glazing bars, 1 segment headed. 2 wooden louvres on end elevation of 2nd floor. This building was formerly used for hanging the hides up to dry, after they had been immersed in the tanning pits. Nos 16 to 26 (even) form a group, together with all the Tannery buildings.
