Listed Building: BLOXWORTH HOUSE, INCLUDING THE ATTACHED WALL AND GATE PIERS ON EAST (108340)

SY 89 SE BLOXWORTH 6/67 Bloxworth House, 20/11/59 including the attached wall and gate piers on east GV I Countryhouse. Built 1608 (former date stone in porch). Altered in C18 and C19 and considerably restored c 1970. Brick walls, with some burnt header decoration, on stone plinth. Tiled roofs with stone eaves courses and coped gables. Brick stacks on ridge and gables, with oversailing caps - some with diagonal shafts. Originally of E-plan form. 2 storeys and attics. Main (north) elevation has central gabled porch - full height. Square-headed doorway with moulded stone surround. 3-light stone mullioned window on first floor and similar 2-light windows in attic. Projecting gabled wings at each end. East (kitchen) wing has a 4-light stone mullioned window on ground floor, a 3-light double-hung sash window with glazing bars on first floor, and a 3-light stone mullioned window in attic. Adjoining this a square stair tower with hipped roof and 2 2-light stone mullioned windows. Recessed sections each side of porch have 3-light stone mullioned windows on each floor. C20 reconstructed stair turret adjoins west (parlour) wing. This wing has an added C18 central bay, with double-hung sashes with glazing bars under gauged arches with keystones. Parapet to bay, with ball finials. Above this, in attic, a timber casement window. This, and all the stone mullioned windows, have lead lights, incorporating some reset C16 stained glass. C19 west extension to parlour wing has a canted bay with stone mullioned windows. Internally, the hall has a C17 stone fireplace with 4-centred arch. Similar, simple fireplace in room over. C17 plank and muntin partition in kitchen. Some first floor rooms have C18 fireplaces with hob grates. Early C19 stair in east tower. In attic, one blocked doorway with 4-centred head. Curved brackets below attic ceiling just east of porch - possible site of former cross-gable. Early example of brickwork in Dorset. Attached boundary wall on east links house to stables (q.v.). Brick wall with moulded coping, and stone gate piers with moulded caps and ball finials - probably C18. RCHM Monument 2. Listing NGR: SY8793494961
