EDO1406 - Common Mead Lane, Gillingham; evaluation 1983-4

The Shaftesbury and District Archaeological Group (SDAG) conducted an archaeological evaluation of land at Common Mead lane in advance of residential development during 1983 and 1984. This involved the excavation of a series of trial trenches by machine across the site, as well as a geophysical survey. The site was immediately to the north of a known Romano-British settlement site which had already been developed for housing in the mid 1970s. Overall only a few sherds of Iron Age and Romano-British pottery were recovered and only one feature was recorded. This feature comprised a circular layer of inferior oolite of unknown function or date. This negative evidence suggests that the Romano-British settlement did not extend into this area. [1][2]
